Since 1992 · a Saturday in May
Handball
Day
A whole morning and afternoon of school handball: schools and academies from Bizkaia, Cantabria and beyond, from ten in the morning to seven in the evening.
Handball Day
At the end of 1991, board member Juan Antonio Pérez told a board meeting he had seen a whole morning of school matches in Cantabria. The first one in Muskiz was held in May 1992. Since then, on a Saturday in May, around thirty teams from schools and academies in Bizkaia, Cantabria and sometimes Gipuzkoa, Navarre and La Rioja play a full day of matches. In 2014, at the 23rd edition, Jorge Dueñas, Spain’s women’s national coach, joins the prize-giving.
The octopus
For that first Handball Day there was a drawing competition among schoolchildren, supervised by coaches Sergio Arce and Julián Noguera. José María Gutiérrez Urbaneta won with an octopus. Since then the octopus has been on the shirts of every school team, which Petronor has donated from the very beginning.
